Fans of Empire were treated to a special moment on Wednesday as its stars Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson reunited for a new project.
The 55-year-old actor, known for his role in Hustle, and the 53-year-old actress from Hidden Figures, joined Kevin Hart, Samuel L. Jackson, Chloe Bailey, and Don Cheadle in the teaser trailer for Peacock’s limited series FigҺt Night: The Million Dollar Heist, which premiered on Wednesday.
The series, based on the iHeart podcast of the same nɑme, centers around a significant armed robbery following Muhammad Ali’s triumphant comeback figҺt against ‘Irish’ Jerry Quarry.
This on-screen reunion for Terrence and Taraji comes over four years after their successful Fox series Empire concluded its six-season run.
The teaser begins with a lively party scene as Ali is seen dominating Quarry on a television screen. Kevin Hart, playing Chicken Man, is spotted dancing at the party and serves as the narrator for the teaser.
He appears in an extravagant outfit featuring a snakeskin sport coat with black satin peaked lapels, capturing the era’s extravagance. Hart describes the evening as ‘the biggest night in Atlanta history,’ emphasizing that the party celebrating Ali’s victory was the place to be.
As Hart sets the scene, the teaser introduces Taraji, portraying Vivian Thomas, who makes a drɑmatic entrance in a stunning plunging pink satin dress.
The teaser suggests gambling is afoot, with Samuel L. Jackson, playing Frank Moten, shown joyously celebrating at a table after a successful bet. Sporting a mustache and an Afro wig with a gray streak, Jackson is dressed in a period-appropriate postal blue suit with wide peaked lapels.
Terrence Howard makes an appearance in the teaser as well, cheering after a winning bet at a roulette table. In costume as Richard Wheeler, Howard wears an eye-catching blown-out brown wig, sparking curiosity on social media during an interview about his lawsuit against Creative Arts Agency (CAA) over alleged underpayment on Empire. The teaser clarifies that Howard’s attire was part of his character’s costume.
Chloe Bailey, appearing as Lena Mosley, is briefly glimpsed at the party, sporting a serious expression that hints at foreboding knowledge.
‘But this little shindig is just the beginning,’ Hart asserts in voiceover after introducing most of the main cast.
The trailer then revisits the characters with slightly extended clips of Jackson and Howard, possibly due to limited completed footage available for editing.
As the tone shifts ominously, Hart predicts, ‘Something’s bound to go down.’ Masked robbers armed with shotguns are then shown gathering outside the party venue, setting a tense atmosphere.
The teaser cuts to the next morning, introducing Don Cheadle as Detective JD Hudson. He arrives at the crime scene, where police officers are examining evidence and searching for fingerprints.
‘This whole city’s about to be a crime scene,’ Cheadle declares dramatically in voiceover, gazing towards the camera.
It remɑins unclear whether Terrence and Taraji’s characters will share significant scenes together or if they are part of a larger ensemble cast.
In Empire, Terrence Howard starred as Lucious Lyon, a former drᴜg dealer turned hip-hop mogul facing the challenge of choosing a successor among his sons to run his record label after being diagnosed with ALS. Taraji P. Henson played Cookie Lyon, Lucious’ ex-wife who returns after completing a 17-year prison sentence, sparking a fierce rivalry over both the label’s leadership and their sons’ affection.
The show garnered critical acclaim and commercial success but concluded after its sixth season, which faced challenges after Jussie Smollett’s departure following legal issues.
