Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, longtime friends and onscreen partners, have shared the screen for decades, but even they have their moments of annoyance with each other.
At the Los Angeles premiere of *Bad Boys: Ride or Die* on Thursday, May 30, the veteran actors candidly shared with PEOPLE some of the little quirks that sometimes get under their skin.
“He likes to rehearse all the time,” Lawrence, 59, revealed about Smith.
Smith, 55, responded with a grin, “That’s funny. I definitely like to…” before unveiling his own pet peeve about his co-star.
“It’s not a hate, but there’s a fun quirk that makes me laugh about Martin all the time. He never takes two sips out of a water bottle,” Smith chuckled. “He drinks the whole water bottle in one go, every time. It’s like, ‘Yo, man!'”
In jest, Lawrence fired back, “That’s because I can’t babysit water.”
The duo, known for their roles as Miami-based detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett in the beloved action franchise, reflected on the journey of filming the fourth installment, slated for release on June 7.
Filming initially commenced in Atlanta in April 2023 but was abruptly paused in July due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Production resumed post-strike and concluded in March 2024.
Asked about the most challenging aspect of shooting *Ride or Die*, both Smith and Lawrence echoed, “To finish the movie.”
“We got shut down in the middle. Double strikes — writer strike, actor strike — right in the middle of the movie,” Smith recounted, expressing frustration over the interruption.
“We wanted to finish the movie really bad. We knew that we were making something special, so trying to keep it all together during that time was difficult,” he explained.
Despite the setbacks, Smith noted that the enforced hiatus turned out to be a blessing in disguise. “As it turned out, it actually helped us — the movie ripened during that time,” he added.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer praised the duo, remarking that there was “never a dull moment” with Lawrence and Smith on set.
“They’re creative and fun. They’re so great to work with,” Bruckheimer said, emphasizing the seamless camaraderie between the actors. “The world is a better place with Will and Martin in it.”
The upcoming *Bad Boys* installment, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall, features a star-studded cast including Vanessa Hudgens, Eric Dane, and Tiffany Haddish, promising fans another adrenaline-fueled ride through the Miami underworld.
