It was no surprise that several celebrities took the opportunity to attend the press night of Romeo & Juliet at The Duke Of York’s Theatre on Thursday evening.
Tom Hiddleston led the stars flocking to the London theatre to see Tom Holland as Romeo in the Jamie Lloyd production of the Shakespeare classic.
The 43-year-old actor was accompanied by his fiancée, Zawe Ashton, and the couple held hands and shared loving glances on the red carpet.
Tom looked typically handsome in a smart navy blue suit, paired with a simple plain T-shirt and shiny dress shoes. Meanwhile, Zawe, 39, exuded sophistication in a white satin smock-style gown with long draped sleeves.
Adding a daring touch, her dress featured a line drawing of a 𝚗aked female body. She accessorized with a box-shaped cream handbag and matching T-bar high heels, while Tom gallantly carried her train.
The couple showed their support for their fellow Marvel star Tom Holland, 27, who is known for his role as Spider-Man.
Hiddleston plays Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while Zawe debuted as Dar-Benn in The Marvels last year.
Another famous couple spotted at the press performance was Maya Jama and Stormzy.
They opted to skip the red carpet, arriving separately and heading straight inside the theatre.
Maya, 29, looked effortlessly chic in a baggy white button-up shirt and flared black trousers, adding height with gold strappy stiletto heels and carrying a large patent leather shoulder bag.
She accessorized with gold hoop earrings and oversized black shades.
Stormzy, 30, kept it casual in a black T-shirt, jogging bottoms, and matching trainers, hiding his face under a black baseball cap and sunglasses while flashing a silver watch.
Also present was Tom’s childhood best friend and fellow actor Harrison Osterfield, 27, who looked dapper in a navy boxy shirt with quirky button-up detailing and matching tailored trousers.
American playwright Jeremy O. Harris attended with a friend, looking stylish in a black and white patterned shirt with a coordinating tie.
Comedian Meera Syal looked effortlessly chic in a black collared shirt tucked into smart trousers, with a denim jacket and white and pink trainers.
Tamzin Outhwaite showcased a classy look in a baby blue linen suit paired with a white waistcoat and bright white trainers, hiding her eyes behind oversized black sunglasses.
Robert Glenister cut a sharp figure in a navy blue button-up shirt with an open collar and black jeans, sporting an oversized dark jacket and black suede shoes on the red carpet.
Tom’s girlfriend Zendaya, 27, attended to show her support but stayed backstage with Tom instead of appearing on the red carpet.
However, the couple was spotted leaving the theatre hand-in-hand after the performance.
Tom looked tired but pleased as he waved to the crowd of fans outside, while Zendaya beamed proudly, leading him to their car.
The initial reactions to this adaptation of Romeo & Juliet have been very positive, with early attendees praising Tom and Juliet actress Francesca Amewudah-Rivers as ‘amazing’ and ‘superb casting.’
Many described the production as ‘violent,’ ‘creative,’ with ‘u𝚗expected humour,’ and ‘lots of kissing.’
One attendee told MailOnline: ‘I’ve never seen anything like it. It was an amazing production and a brilliant performance by Tom. There were so many jaw-dropping moments. The whole thing was a real triumph.’
However, opinions were divided over award-winning director Jamie Lloyd’s signature stripped-back staging, with some finding it ‘underwhelming.’
Photos shared online show a modern and industrial set, with a large iron fence and block letters spelling out Verona, while the cast wore casual outfits like black hoodies and T-shirts.
The Daily Mail’s Patrick Marmion gave the play four stars, praising Tom Holland’s performance and commanding presence.
