They’ve swiftly risen to prominence as Hollywood’s favored power duo.
Tom Holland and Zendaya showcased their status on Thursday evening, with the actress standing by her boyfriend’s side at the press night of Romeo & Juliet at The Duke Of York’s Theatre in London.
Portraying Romeo in the Jamie Lloyd production alongside Francesca Amewudah-Rivers as Juliet, the Spider-Man star, aged 27, emerged hand in hand with Zendaya, also 27, after the performance to greet the eagerly awaiting fans.
Appearing somewhat fatigued but content, the actor acknowledged the crowd with a wave, donning a black Prada sweater paired with matching tailored trousers. Meanwhile, Zendaya displayed her signature flawless style in a gothic-inspired black dress embellished with sequins.
Her stunning attire featured a corseted bodice to accentuate her slender waist and a voluminous flared skirt. Complementing her ensemble with black leather boots for added height, she accessorized with a lengthy beaded pendant necklace.
Sporting an elegant bun, Zendaya radiated pride as she guided her partner towards their awaiting vehicle.
Initial feedback on the modern adaptation of the Shakespearean tragedy has been largely positive, with attendees of previews taking to social media to commend lead actors Tom and Francesca as “amazing” and applauding the casting as “superb.”
Revealing tidbits about the production, many hinted at its “violent” and “creative” nature, enriched with “ᴜnеxpеcted humor” and “plenty of kissing.”
While some praised award-winning director Jamie’s distinctive minimalist staging, others found it “underwhelming.” Photos shared online depicted a contemporary and industrial setting, featuring a large iron fence and block lettering spelling out Verona, the play’s setting, while the cast sported casual attire like black hoodies and T-shirts.
In his review for The Daily Mail, Patrick Marmion awarded the play four stars and lauded Tom, remarking, “His commanding cheekbones and curving jaw sᴜck the breath from the audience and keep us wrapped in his dreamy gaze.”
For Tom, this marks his return to the stage after his West End debut in 2008, starring as the lead in Billy Elliot the Musical at the age of 12.
Director Jamie expressed his admiration for Tom’s talent, stating, “Tom Holland is one of the greatest, most exciting young actors in the world. It is an honor to welcome him back to the West End.”
Reflecting on his debut performance, Tom expressed gratitude to his co-stars on Instagram, describing the show as “a highlight of my career.”
The production also features Freema Agyeman (Nurse), Michael Balogun (Friar), Tomiwa Edun (Capulet), Mia Jerome (Montague), Daniel Quinn-Toye (Paris), Ray Sesay (Tybalt), Nima Taleghani (Benvolio), and Joshua-Alexander Williams (Mercutio), with Callum Heinrich and Kody Mortimer as Camera Operators.
Scheduled to run for 12 weeks until August 3, the production is reportedly set to transfer to Broadway later this year.
