With 15 wins, she stands as one of the most Grammy-recognized artists of her generation. Demonstrating her exceptional talent, Alicia Keys took the stage on Friday adorned in a white jumpsuit reminiscent of an astronaut’s attire, complete with towering platform shoes resembling moon boots. Her electrifying performance was a highlight of Pride Live’s 2019 Stonewall Day concert in New York City, drawing in over 5,000 fans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising.
As the Fallin’ songstress surprised the audience, her set followed a two-hour PRIDE programme featuring notable figures such as Lady Gaga, Chelsea Clinton, and Whoopi Goldberg. Opening with “Girl on Fire” and delivering a soul-stirring rendition of “True Colors” by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, Keys passionately voiced her support for LGBTQ equality throughout the performance.
Acknowledging the significance of places like the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, Keys emphasized the collective power of individuals coming together for change. Her set also featured hits like “In Common,” “Gypsy Woman,” and “Empire State of Mind,” alongside her interpretation of Robin S.’s “Show Me Love.”
In an interview with the Advocate on the same day, Keys reiterated her commitment to educating her children about the importance of equality, highlighting the role of personal actions and behaviors in shaping societal dialogue.
Her performance marked a poignant moment in the festivities of WorldPride 2019, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, also known as Stonewall 50 or Stonewall Day, which has been celebrated across the city for a month.
