Keanu Reeves, one of Hollywood’s most adored actors, recently reflected on his career and personal memories as he prepares for the release of the highly anticipated “Matrix 4.” In a comprehensive interview for the cover of Esquire’s Winter issue, set to be released on December 7, Reeves, 57, discussed his desire to work with his “Speed” co-star Sandra Bullock again, citing their “good chemistry.”
Reeves also looked back on his friendship with River Phoenix, who passed away nearly 30 years ago from a tragic overdose, describing him as “a really special person.” He mentioned that he’d love to reunite with Bullock in a future project: “I sure hope so. She’s such a wonderful artist and person, and I think we have good chemistry. It would be really exciting and interesting to get the chance to perform with her again.” The two starred together in the 1994 action film “Speed,” sparking speculation among fans about their off-screen relationship.
However, Bullock, interviewed for the same article, clarified that they were never more than good friends. “Keanu’s a guy who, I feel like, is friends with every woman he’s ever dated,” she said. “I don’t think there’s anyone who has something horrible to sɑy about him.” Reflecting on their friendship, she added that they had the opportunity to grow up on “parallel roads,” and that she rеmains in awe of Reeves as a human being.
The cover of the magazine was shot while Reeves was in Paris filming “John Wick 4.” He sported the long, shaggy hair and scruffy beard of the character, wearing a pinstripe suit in the black-and-white cover photo. While promoting “The Matrix Resurrections,” Reeves noted the impact that his role as Neo had on his life: “It changed my life, and it was such a wonderful creative experience.”
The fourth installment of the “Matrix” franchise comes 18 years after “The Matrix Revolutions,” which was intended to be the final chapter of the original trilogy. The upcoming film follows Neo’s transformation from a hacker named Thomas Anderson into a revolutionary who learns that his reality is a computer simulation.
Reeves is currently filming “John Wick 4,” a movie he wasn’t sure would happen. He recalled going to a theater to watch “John Wick 3” in 2019, uncertain if the franchise would continue. “I wɑnted to soak it in, to see it on the big screen—these movies are made for the big screen,” he said.
Reeves also revisited memories of his late friend, River Phoenix, who tragically overdosed in his early 20s outside The Viper Room in Los Angeles in 1993. “It’s weird speaking about him in the past. I hate speaking about him in the past,” he said. Reeves described Phoenix as “a really special person, so original, unique, smart, talented, fiercely creative. Thoughtful. Brave. And funny. And dark. And light. It was great to have known him.” The actor expressed how much he misses Phoenix, acknowledging his influence and legacy.
