Tom Holland mentioned that his parents would call him out if he started acting like a “movie star.”
Since being cast as Spider-Man, the 25-year-old actor has achieved global fɑme, but his friends and family have helped him stay grounded. In an interview with ITV’s This Morning, Holland shared how he avoided the pitfalls of fɑme, explaining that he has a strong support network.
“I just have a great network of friends and family,” he said, pointing out that his circle still includes the people he grew up with. “My friends from home are all my friends from when I was a kid.”
He emphasized that this support system keeps his ego in check. “My family are the first people to tell me if I’m having a moment of, I guess, movie stardom. And, you know, they just keep me grounded,” Holland remarked.
Tom clarified that he doesn’t intend to let fɑme get to his head, adding that he values his friends and their honest feedback. “I like my mates, and they wouldn’t like me if I behaved like some of the people from Hollywood,” he said.
The actor also talked about his role in the film Uncharted, co-starring Mark Wahlberg. He admitted that working with the 50-year-old Wahlberg, known for his muscular build and rigorous workouts, made him feel like the older actor’s son.
“The only luxury of the lockdown for me was that we went on set for the first day of shooting, and I realized I looked like Mark’s 12-year-old son. He’s massive, right? He’s so broad. I mеan, look at him,” Holland joked.
Inspired by Wahlberg, Holland used the CоVID-19 lockdown to focus on his fitness. He said, “I had five months at home because we shut down for CоVID, and all I did was eat and train every day.”
Returning to the set after the lockdown, Holland received a positive reaction from Wahlberg. “When I came back to work, he actually commented, ‘Wow, you’ve put on some serious size.’ I was really grateful for the break,” Holland mentioned.
Uncharted, based on the popular video game series, features Holland as treasure hunter Nathan Drake, with Wahlberg playing his mentor, Victor Sullivan. The film faced a lengthy development process, and much of its current cast and crew were assembled in 2020. Filming concluded that same year, despite CоVID-19-related challenges, and Holland returned for reshoots in the summer.
Uncharted is set to debut in the United Kingdom on February 11th and will premiere in the United States on February 18th.
