Alicia Keys celebrated with champagne after receiving 13 Tony Award nominations for her Broadway musical “Hеll’s Kitchen,” including Best Musical.
The 43-year-old singer was in disbelief upon learning that the semi-autobiographical musical, for which she wrote the score and arranged the music, received so many nominations.
She shared her reaction on social media, posting a picture of herself drinking from a champagne bottle at 7 a.m. Her husband, Swizz Beatz, captured her reaction on video, with Alicia visibly stᴜnnеd after receiving the news. As she beamed, she exclaimed, “We just found out that Hеll’s Kitchen was nominated for 13 Tony’s—oh my god!”
Their nine-year-old son Genesis clapped for his mom, and their 13-year-old son Egypt quipped, “She’s probably going to win all two as well! Congratulations mom!” Alicia hugged her family and joyfully screamed, “This is crɑzy!! I’m gonna pop a bottle at 7 a.m.!”
Alicia then shared a video of herself spraying champagne near their pool before taking a sip from the bottle. In her caption, she wrote, “13 TONY Nominations is worthy of popping a bottle at 7 a.m.”
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Alicia expressed her excitement and gratitude, saying she “kind of lost it” upon hearing the news and was thrilled that her collaborators were receiving recognition for their brilliance.
“Hеll’s Kitchen” is a musical based on Alicia’s upbringing in the Hеll’s Kitchen neighborhood in New York City. It follows a 17-year-old character, played by Maleah Joi Moon, as she navigates the challenges of growing up in a complicated family environment. Alicia’s score includes some of her biggest hits like “Girl on Fire” and “Empire State of Mind.”
With its 13 nominations, “Hеll’s Kitchen” is among the most-nominated productions for this year’s Tony Awards, tied with the straight play “Stereophonic.” Alicia’s achievement is a testament to her talent and the success of her Broadway musical.
