Reunion and Whisky: Keanu Reeves and Sofia Coppola Collaborate on a Centennial Tribute Film
Keanu Reeves has joined forces with his ex-girlfriend, director Sofia Coppola, for a special project commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Japanese whisky maker, the House of Suntory. This unexpected collaboration holds sentimental value as the duo, who once shared a romantic history, worked together on a tribute film.
The centennial celebration features Keanu and others savoring the whisky while the iconic tune “Crimson and Clover” by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts sets the backdrop, evoking a nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of their initial connection.
For context, Keanu and Sofia dated in the early ’90s, having met on the set of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 film “Bram Stoker’s Dracula,” as revealed in a People exclusive. Suntory holds a special place for Sofia due to its prominent role in her 2003 film “Lost in Translation,” where Bill Murray starred as Bob Harris, a struggling American actor promoting Suntory whisky during a midlife crisis in Tokyo.
In a recent interview with People, Keanu expressed his enthusiasm about working with Sofia on the project, describing it as a “cool” opportunity. He mentioned collaborating with Sofia and her brother Roman Coppola on a short commercial and a docu-series, emphasizing the uniqueness of the experience.
Keanu, known for his appreciation of Japanese culture, particularly anime and filmmaking, shared his positive experience filming the tribute in Japan under Sofia’s artistic direction. He highlighted the joy of meeting the skilled artisans, Kabuki actors, calligraphists, and other craftspeople associated with Suntory, immersing himself in their passion and craftsmanship.
