The music producer DJ Khaled received a fresh lease on life after the birth of his first kid, Asahd, and he remembered JAY-Z telling him that would happen. 

“It’s all for them,” Khaled, 47, said in a cover story interview with Variety on Wednesday. “Everything — the house we live in, the cars we drive, the watches we wear, the music we listen to… “JAY-Z once told me, ‘Wait until you have a child — that’s when life truly begins.'” 

He added, “And as soon as my kids were born, my life changed. Not just these blessings, but also my mentality. Money doesn’t define success. Money doesn’t define being a mogul. To me, true success is being happy.”

Khaled shares sons Asahd and Aalam with partner Nicole Tuck. In May, he opened up to PEOPLE about his step-by-step morning routine — which includes expressing gratitude for his family. “That’s my routine on-cycle and off-cycle. Because there’s only one cycle. It’s called showing gratitude in life every day,” Khaled told PEOPLE.

DJ Khaled also discussed his friendship with Drake in the Variety interview, saying that they have bonded over their children. He described Drake’s family as “beautiful” and said that his 5-year-old son Adonis “plays good basketball too” while admiring the “knιfе Talk” rapper’s court in his Toronto house.
