Circa 1999–2000: They court each other.

When the singer was a youngster, they first met during the MTV Spring Break Festival in Cancun, Mexico, between September 1999 and August 2000.”I was 18 when we first met, 19 when we started dating,” she told Seventeen back in 2008.”We were friends first for a year and a half before we went on any dates,” the singer explained to Oprah Winfrey in 2013.

November 2001: They confirm their relationship on Vanity Fair.

With a couple’s shoot for Vanity Fair, the couple formally confirms their affection, spilling additional details on their relationship and how they met.”We were just beginning to date each other”, the rapper tells the magazine, adding, “Well, you know, you’ve got to try first”. You must dazzle…. wine and dine. She’s a lovely Southern lady, but she’s not impressed. However, I would have had to be this cool”.

October 10, 2002: Jay-Z debuts Beyoncé on his track.

The rapper releases “03 Bonnie & Clyde”, his first song devoted to the singer, from his seventh studio album, The Blueprint 2: The Gift & the Curse. The singer also appears in the song video, which they filmed together in Mexico.

May 14, 2003: Beyoncé debuts Jay-Z on her track.

Beyoncé releases “Crazy in Love,” her first song dedicated to Jay-Z, from her debut solo studio album, Dangerously in Love. The song went on to win Best R&B Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards the following year. The two are not yet public about their relationship, but the special tracks fuel continuous rumors of a romance. Years later, during a 2013 interview with the singer, Oprah Winfrey reminded Bey how she had recommended the singer to keep quiet about her romance with the rapper during their first talk. “I remember the first time you were on the Oprah Show, I told you, ‘Don’t go around telling people who you’re dating'”, Winfrey reflected.

August 29, 2004: They make their red carpet debut.

The singer and rapper make their first public appearance as a couple on the red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards in Miami, where they both win Moonmen.

April 4, 2008: They get married.

The couple marries in a low-key, intimate ceremony in the rapper’s Manhattan loft.”It was a very emotional wedding—lots of crying—and spiritual,” a source tells People afterward. Jay-Z later answers queries about the wedding in an interview with Vibe in August. “That’s ridiculous for me to confirm”, he said. “I don’t have…” I’m going to claim that was a foolish question. I just think it’s a portion of your life you should keep to yourself. You have to or you’ll go nuts in this line of work. You must have something sacred to yourself and those around you. I shared so much of my life, my childhood, and my family with the world, including the death of my nephew. I should be able to cling to something. You need something to say to yourself, ‘Okay, I could chill out, and this is it’.

In an interview with Seventeen, Bey also discusses marriage. “There was no rush—no one expected me to run off and get married”, she explains to the magazine. “I don’t think you’ll love the same thing when you’re 20 as you do when you’re 30″. So that was my rule: I would never marry before the age of 25. Before you can share who you are with someone else, I believe you must first come to know yourself, know what you want, spend some time alone, and be proud of who you are”.
