Billie Eilish Pays Tribute to Current and Former Female Stars of ‘SNL’ in Her Performance

On the December 16 episode of “Saturday Night Live,” Billie Eilish delivered a heartfelt and simple rendition of her Һit song “What Was I Made For?” from this year’s popular “Barbie” movie. The song has become a source of comfort for fans, who have embraced it as a means of emotional healing.

Seated across from her brother and collaborator Finneas, who played the piano for the performance, Eilish presented the beautiful rendition, marking the song’s television debut.

Eilish’s appearance on the show coincided with the return of SNL alum Kate McKinnon, who served as the host for the evening. McKinnon, known for her role as Weird Barbie in “Barbie,” joined “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig on stage to introduce Eilish’s performance.

As Eilish sang, a video montage played in the background, paying tribute to the wоmen of “Saturday Night Live,” past and present. The montage featured home movies and photos of cast members such as Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, Punkie Johnson, Molly Kearney (the show’s first openly nonbinary cast member), Ego Nwodim, Sarah Sherman, and Chloe Troast.

Additionally, images of Kate McKinnon and fellow SNL alums Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig were included, with Rudolph and Wiig making cameos earlier in the show during McKinnon’s opening monologue.

Eilish, who secured the Film Song of the Year at Variety’s 2023 Hitmakers ceremony in early December, has garnered nominations for five Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and a Critic’s Choice Award.

During an appearance on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon, the singer discussed the cultural impact of the song. She mentioned that Greta Gerwig had specifically requested her to write the “heart song” for Barbie.

And that, you know, resonated with us. It lingered with us,” she shared with Fallon. “I feel like [the song] brought wоmen together in this way that I haven’t felt part of like that. It made me feel really good.”
